Brake Noise
Brake noise runs from a dusty squeal to metal-on-metal grinding that usually means the pads are worn out. Your brakes are what stop the car - if something sounds wrong, it is worth a quick look before it gets worse.
Symptoms
- Squeal or squeak when you slow down
- Grinding or rumbling from a wheel
- Pedal pulses or the steering wheel shakes when you brake
- Brake warning light, or a soft spongy pedal
- Car pulls to one side when you stop
Can I keep driving with noisy brakes?
- Light squealing at low speed is sometimes dust or glaze on the pads. Still get it checked, but it is usually not an emergency.
- Grinding metal sounds mean the pads are likely gone. Drive as little as you can and call us right away.
- If the pedal goes to the floor, the car pulls hard to one side, or you smell burning brakes, stop driving and call us.
Common causes
- Worn brake pads or shoes
- Glazed or warped rotors - the disc the pad clamps onto
- Stuck caliper or collapsed brake hose
- Missing hardware - shims, clips, or grease where the pad sits
- Debris stuck between the pad and rotor
What happens next
- Tell us what you hear and when - around town vs. highway, wet vs. dry.
- We measure pad and rotor thickness, check that the calipers move freely, and show you what we find.
- We explain what needs attention now and what can wait. You pick when to schedule.
