Transmission Slipping
Slipping feels like the engine revs but the car does not accelerate the way it should - or you get harsh shifts, delayed engagement, or a flare between gears. Automatic and manual transmissions fail differently, but driving hard while it slips causes internal damage fast.
Symptoms
- RPM flare between gears or a delayed shift
- Hard bang into gear from Park or Drive
- Burnt smell or dark transmission fluid
- Whining or clunking in certain gears
- Check engine light with transmission-related codes
Can I keep driving if the transmission is slipping?
- Gentle driving to the shop may be OK for a mild flare. Avoid towing, mountain passes, and full throttle.
- If it slips in every gear, will not move, or overheats, stop driving. Continued slip destroys clutches and bands inside.
- Do not flush a failing transmission without diagnosis. Wrong fluid or pressure can make it worse.
Common causes
- Low or degraded transmission fluid
- Worn clutch packs or bands - inside an automatic
- Clutch wear or hydraulic fault - on a manual
- Faulty solenoid or valve body issue
- Internal wear that may need overhaul - after proper inspection
What happens next
- Call us. Tell us when it slips - cold vs. hot, which gear, any recent fluid service.
- We check fluid level and condition, scan for codes, and road test when it is safe.
- We explain service, repair, or replacement based on what we find - not a flat quote from the symptom alone.
